Nearly 420 early childhood professionals came together in Darwin for a day of inspiration, learning, laughter and connection at the 12th Little People, Big Dreams Conference!
On Saturday, 17 October, Child Australia proudly welcomed educators, leaders and early childhood professionals from across the Northern Territory and beyond to the 2026 Little People, Big Dreams (LPBD) Conference.
Under the theme “Growing Ideas That Matter: Empowering Voices, Shaping Practice”, the conference offered an opportunity to connect, challenge thinking and explore fresh ideas to strengthen outcomes for children.
From inspiring keynote presentations and engaging breakout sessions to a buzzing Marketplace and plenty of memorable moments, the day celebrated the passion and commitment driving the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) sector forward.
A Wonderful Start to the Day
The conference opened with a special Welcome to Country featuring children from Bagot OSHC alongside Edwin Fejo, whose traditional dance brought culture, connection and joyful energy to the room.
Dr Tanzil Rahman MLA officially opened the conference on behalf of the Hon Jo Hersey MLA, Minister for Education and Training, followed by a warm welcome from Child Australia CEO Tina Holtom.
Reflecting on the day, Child Australia CEO Tina Holtom highlighted the passion and dedication of the sector.
“The 2026 Little People, Big Dreams Conference has once again highlighted the incredible passion, creativity and commitment within our sector. At a time of change and growing expectations, it’s inspiring to see educators and leaders coming together to challenge thinking, share fresh ideas and champion every child’s right to be heard, valued and included.”
Two Inspiring Keynotes
The morning featured two exceptional keynote speakers who encouraged delegates to reflect on how we understand, connect with and support children.
Jessica Staines, founder of Koori Curriculum, opened with “Windows, Mirrors and Sliding Doors: Creating Early Childhood Spaces Where Every Child Belongs.” Jessica explored the powerful role educators play in creating culturally responsive and inclusive learning environments where every child feels seen, valued and connected.
Following morning tea, Lael Stone took to the stage with “Understanding Children, Understanding Ourselves.” Her engaging presentation explored the feelings and needs behind children’s behaviour, the importance of emotional connection, and how educator self-awareness can transform everyday interactions.
Lael’s presentation particularly resonated with delegates, with one attendee sharing:
“The highlight of the conference for me was learning more about children’s emotional development, behaviour, and the importance of understanding the feelings and needs behind their actions. It was a truly inspiring learning experience.”
Another delegate mentioned: “I really enjoyed the keynote speakers, as they spoke about really crucial topics and their words stimulated us to be prepared for the day.”

More Opportunities to Learn and Connect
Responding to feedback from previous conferences, this year’s program introduced more opportunities for delegates to participate in breakout sessions.
There were 18 engaging sessions, with Ballroom A proudly sponsored by HESTA, where delegates explored practical strategies, new perspectives and emerging approaches to early childhood education and care.
The expanded program showcased a fantastic line-up of Northern Territory-based speakers, including presenters from regional and remote communities, bringing valuable local perspectives, practical insights and real-world experiences to the conference. The sessions sparked meaningful conversations, inspired fresh thinking and equipped delegates with practical ideas and strategies to take back to their services.
The enthusiasm and inspiration shared throughout the day were reflected in delegate feedback, with many highlighting their favourite sessions and the valuable knowledge they gained:
“Both of the keynote speakers were amazing. On top, Kelly Oldfield was so knowledgeable and provided practical advice. I also loved the music session with Leonie. All very useful.”
“I enjoyed the keynote speakers but Leonie Cecich’s Music ‘n’ Kids was the highlight for me!”
“My highlight was learning new ideas and strategies to support children’s learning and wellbeing. I enjoyed experiences shared by other educators and gaining new ideas for creating positive environments for children.”
“My highlight was the ability to connect with Educators and leaders from remote communities and gain insight to the differing barriers that this brings”

A Buzzing Marketplace and Plenty of Fun!
Between sessions, the LPBD Marketplace was filled with activity as delegates explored innovative products, practical resources and services supporting the ECEC sector.
Morning tea and a delicious buffet lunch provided opportunities to catch up with colleagues, connect with exhibitors and discover new ideas. Delegates also enjoyed their Goodstart Early Learning conference bags, filled with goodies and resources to take home.
Of course, no LPBD Conference would be complete without a little fun! The Territory Childcare Group photobooth captured plenty of smiles and laughter throughout the day.
The celebrations continued at the Twinkl-sponsored Sundowner, where delegates relaxed, enjoyed refreshments and door prizes, and connected with colleagues following a full day of learning.
