About the Series
In this series, we’re going to gently unpack what’s really going on underneath some of the behaviours educators are managing every day.
We’re talking about behaviours like really big emotions, constant movement, fatigue and difficulty settling.
Join Nateenee, founder of Dental on Wheels, a child-led, play-based mobile dental service, who specialises as an oral health therapist, and an orofacial myofunctional therapist. Her work within the early years sector, and her own personal experience as a Mum, has given her insight into how a child’s mouth and airways can affect their behaviour.
With Nateenee’s help, we’re going to connect what we as educators see everyday back to what’s happening in the child’s body – and how that just might be connected with oral health.
Why This Series Matters
Have you noticed that child who’s always really restless when it’s sleep time? Do you see the child who picks at their food and doesn’t ever seem to eat well? Have you noticed the child who seems hyperactive right before it’s nap time? Or perhaps you’ve seen a child sleepy and uninterested in play first thing in the morning?
Tune in to this series to build your observation skills to better support the children in your care.
- Understand how to use a ‘whole child lens’ when it comes to behaviour.
- Dig into how oral health is more than just clean teeth.
- Recognise signs that airways do affect sleep, which directly affects behaviour.
- Understand a little more about brain development and regulation.
- Discover how your observations can support families deal with bigger issues.
- Gain practical tips for your daily practice.
- Learn more about how to work with Health Professionals in your Service.
Your observation skills, relationships with children across a whole day of play, eating and sleeping, gives you a valuable insight. You see what others might not. You might put together a pattern of behaviour that points to an airways issue, a teeth, soft palate or tongue tie issue.
Use the ‘whole child lens’ to view their routines and behaviours, so you can better support each child. You don’t need to diagnose – but you can share your observations and prompt parents and carers to take action with their health practitioners. All they need is your support!
