As educators, leaders and sector professionals, we often greet August with a knowing smile (and maybe a deep breath): Here comes the busiest month of the year. And rightly so, because August brings with it the magic, creativity and chaos of Book Week.
This year marks a particularly special celebration: 80 years of Children’s Book Week in Australia! With the inspiring theme, “Book an Adventure,” the Children’s Book Council of Australia invites us all to reflect on the power of stories to transport, transform, and connect us.

Book Week ideas to try in your service or community
- Ask families to share their favourite books to read with their children—then display them in your book corner or reading nook.
- Invite children to bring in their favourite storybooks from home and tell why they love them.
- Host a dress-up day (or week!) where everyone comes as their favourite book character.
- Send home rhymes and songs that children love singing at your service—perfect for extending learning into the home.
- Share simple reading tips with families to build their confidence during story time:
- Chat about the pictures (it’s okay if the words get a little jumbled).
- Play “Word Detective”—pick a word together and find it every time it appears.
- Most importantly—have fun! Laugh, get silly, use voices, make mistakes… because adventure lives in the joy of connection.
